July 3, 2018 – The International Occupational Health Association (IOHA) announced Nancy Leppink, JD as the opening keynote speaker for the 2018 IOHA International Scientific Conference. Ms. Leppink is the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Chief of the Labour Administration, Labour Inspection, Occupational Safety and Health Branch. Her experience includes: governmental enforcement, practicing in the areas of occupational safety, and health, human rights, labour and employment law.

Ms. Leppink’s topic is “The Consequences of Globalization on Worker Health and Safety in Developing Countries.” Her keynote will illuminate the history of the ILO and its functions in tripartite collaboration including assisting governments of developing countries with regard to regulatory structures and OHS management systems. With a global economy dominated by large multinational corporations’ free access to labor in lesser developed countries, new health and safety impacts are being introduced into rural economies poorly equipped to handle them. Ms. Leppink will address in particular the ILO’s OSH-GAP analysis focusing on the hazardous sectors of construction and agriculture, global supply chains, and protection for child laborers. Her presentation will be held on Monday, September 24 at 8:30 AM.
Also of note, Roger Alesbury, MSc, Dip OH, CFFOH of the Occupational Hygiene Training Association (Ret.) will be receiving the IOHA Lifetime Achievement Award. His presentation will look at examples of developing programs in parts of the world where there are few or no occupational hygiene resources, where the focus is on finding or developing skilled people, equipment and basic facilities. His talk will also include thoughts and reflections based on a lifetime in occupational hygiene, and a look at what it takes to build capability and grow occupational hygiene. His presentation will take place on Tuesday, September 25 at 11:00 AM.
IOHA 2018 will take place September 24-26, 2018 with professional development courses (PDCs) being offered September 22, 23, and 27. The conference is being held in Washington D.C. at the Marriott Marquis hotel. The theme of IOHA Washington 2018 is “Bringing Better Health to Workers Worldwide.”
