Flu season is back. While you can get the flu anytime of the year, it is more prevalent in the fall and winter months. With the kids in school and adults at work, we come in contact with a lot of germs on a daily basis. Here are some ways to prepare and help avoid getting the flu as best as possible:
- Get vaccinated. The CDC says the single best way to avoid the flu is to get the flu shot as soon as you can.
- Wash your hands regularly. Use warm water and soap and if it is not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching mouth, nose, and eyes. Germs spread easily when contaminated hands come in contact with mucous membrane. Try not to touch these areas without washing your hands first.
- Avoid Sharing Utensils and Glasses. Avoid sharing anything that touches the mouth. Wash used dishes and utensils in the dishwasher or in the sink with hot water and soap.
- Eat a balanced diet. This along with regular exercise and getting adequate rest will help build your immunity system.
Signs and Symptoms of the Flu
The flu virus is a respiratory illness which can be mild or severe. Symptoms may include:
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle or body aches
- Fatigue (tiredness)
- Possible fever
- Possible vomiting
If you get ill with the flu virus make sure to get adequate rest and plenty of fluids. In some cases, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication.
